BUC FIFTY /NME RECORDS /TRACKDEALAZ Recently, we've had a client "Buc Fifty" (a very clever and unique name indeed. Thank you for his inspiration , 50 cent) with a label called ""NME Records. Buc has been trying to establish a
place for partnership between him and a hot hip hop production team (a crew of hip hop producers,
we've all heard their records). The newly formed team is called "TrackDealaz".
Well, I got a call late one sunday nite from one of Buc's team, begging
to come in for a session that nite. Although the rooms were booked, I asked
a client (another well known artist) to cancel to another day, pulled a few
tricks to make things happen to help Buc's team look good in the eyes of
this production team. I forced my (Platinum) engineer to leave his family
and dinner table on a Sunday nite to come in and do the session. The session
went great, the guest production team/artists were really cool but, at the
end of the nite.... instead of payment for the studio time and service until
3AM, I got a sob story about Buc getting caught up in the legal system,,
having to spend the nite in jail and a promise to make a deferred payment
the next day.
Right away my inner alarm went
off, but based on my prior conversations with Buc, and what I thought was a respected business relationship with him and his team, I made a snap decision to trust them for 1 nite. Well as the story goes, I never heard from them again or Buc. I had come thru for them about 8 times in a row to end up getting stiffed. I thought they were trustworthy people.Another expensive lesson learned. |
We had an intern that also interned at Atlantic Records. One night our intern called us up excited that the rapper Maino wants to get into the studio, it's an emergency he said. . . . RULE...It's never an emergency, Usually a scam. If it's such an emergency, they can come up with emergency funds. Well, hindsight is 20/20. We had Maino come in. Cool brother, we hit it off.. He tells us to contact his manager This is unscrupulous business ethic. I am a total stranger to him. He doesn't know who I am or what I'm capable of. I can be his best friend or worst nightmare. He chooses to put the latter to the test in order to avoid payment for services rendered to his artist. Shame on Gene Nelson. Gene Nelson, you are a deadbeat. Here's what I know. I do NOT rip off people that come to me in order to get ahead. Period! I never have and it’s not in my blood. I am a man of integrity and I tend to feel that be default, most people should feel the same about themselves. Unfortunately in this business, this is NOT the norm. There are a lot of people that are not good. Simply stay awy, and if you must deal with them, WATCH YOUR BACK! However, this is my business ethic, and I've lasted and made great music and ends meet in this industry for more than 30 years . . . longer than most of my staff have been alive. I’m one of the few that have done that...but I'm living proof that it can be done! As a reward, I’ve been blessed with knowing some really beautiful and positive people. Some of who you’ll be hearing from right here. Next month I'll bring to you more the the bottom of the barrel of deadbeat clientsi,.Oh by the way, Maino, I’d look for another manager if I were you, Gene Nelson hasn’t seemed to have gotten you out there where you should be with your talent, maybe he stiffed your record label too! Peace
